Sainsburys on balance bad for High Street
More feedback - thanks to the Gibson Family
We just wanted to add our names to the list of those against the proposed development by Sainsury's of a new supermarket on Military Road. I feel that the independent shops in the High Street coexist well with the two existing supermarkets and we regularly shop at both Waitrose and Aldi and at shops in the High Street. A large supermarket (or hypermarket as it seems that the Sainsbury's will sell all manner of goods in addition to food) is likely to tip the balance away from the smaller shops. Any claimed gains in employment would no doubt be negated by the closure of many smaller shops leaving the High Street a wasteland of banks, building societies, estate agents and charity shops.
Best regards, and good luck with your campaign,

Hythe
Agreed -Three supermarkets are enough for Hythe.
We certainly don't need FOUR!
More feedback - thanks Sandy
Having read Jo Nicoll's letter in the Herald today, can I add my name to your list of objectors to this outrageous proposal?
As a family, we are frequent visitors to Hythe - for all the reasons outlined in the Herald letter - it's individual character, which will be completely spoiled by this development. Two supermarkets is surely enough for any town of this size.
Best regards, and good luck with your campaign,
Sandy Fleming

The Channel Chamber doesn't represent Hythe
In response to an email from The Channel Chamber
Thank you firstly for your PR response, it all paints a lovely picture. The only problem is this is only going to bring with it all that has helped to destroy high streets up and down this country. Folkestone being one of them with a lack of meaningfull shops including butchers, bakers, grocers, florists, cards shops, newsagents - all small businesses run by people with faces that can't compete with a giant superstore on their doorstep.
